Paint and New Pylon Sign Faces with Translucent Graphics

Our team has worked extensively with Milan Capital. We previously collaborated with their team on retail storefront graphics, pylon sign LED retrofits, and property management signs. For this project, we began by repainting the pylon cabinet and pole cover brown to match the adjacent buildings. Next, we replaced all sign faces with new ones. 

We significantly differ from other sign companies in printing backlit pylon sign graphics. Because we have invested in the latest HP wide-format print technology, we can use white ink, which most other sign companies don’t have. White ink lets us do a flood-white setup with printed color ink on top. It is an excellent way to reduce the “washed-out” appearance of colors when the LEDs turn on. 

By the way, when we print sign faces with a color/white/color profile, our technicians avoid the over-saturated color display when the sign is not illuminated. The layer of white ink makes a significant difference in keeping the colors brand-correct whether the sign is illuminated or not. 

Additional Techniques to Keep Backlit Sign Faces from Looking “Washed Out”

Printing with white ink is the finishing touch that significantly improves the fabrication of sign faces. However, there are additional critical steps. 

• Top-shelf materials. High-quality translucent materials distribute light evenly and maintain vibrant colors. UV-resistant inks also prevent colors from fading in sunlight. Whenever possible, we use thicker panels to help diffuse light more effectively.
• LED lighting. Use LEDs instead of fluorescent lights. LEDs offer more consistent brightness, better color rendering, and longer life. Also, distributing light sources evenly prevents dark areas, which can lead to a washed-out appearance.
• Maintenance. Backlit pylon signs are indeed low-maintenance. However, they do need occasional cleanings. Dust and grime accumulating on the surfaces reduce color vibrancy.
