When Woodbridge High School’s administration was looking for a sign team to do rough surface wall graphics in Irvine, CA, they looked on the internet. They found our shop and liked what they saw on the website. Here is what we did for this client.

Woodbridge High School Adds Branding to Its Location with Wall Graphics and Decals

Located at 2 Meadowbrook, Woodbridge High School is part of the Irvine Unified School District. A Grammy Award-winning school, students and faculty are proud of their arts program. To highlight the branding at the location, the client wanted a large wall decal in the Admissions Office. 

The challenge was that the wall was wallpapered with a texture, which made the installation of standard vinyl graphics challenging. Our team recommended using Avery High Tack cast vinyl to conform over the texture. Moreover, the installation would require the use of plenty of heat to allow the vinyl material to stretch into the texture. 

That said, the final result looks excellent. The graphic and lettering display the school’s logo, fully conform to the wall surface, and perfectly brand the facility. Also, notice that the logo’s arrow points to the electric guitars lining the hallway!

We Routinely Deal with Challenging and Rough Surface Wall Graphics

Before beginning any work on the project, we always conduct a site survey. During this appointment, we gauge the adhesion options for the walls and other surfaces we work with. These steps let us choose the right vinyl from the start, preventing future challenges such as peeling material. 

Over the years, we have succeeded in installing vinyl graphics, decals, and wall wraps on a broad range of challenging surfaces. For example, when dealing with painted brick and block walls, we used cast vinyl with extra aggressive adhesive. A wall with aging textured wallpaper called for conformable vinyl with an aggressive adhesive. It prevented any separation of the vinyl from the substrate. Similarly, the texturing affects the vinyl, which gives the graphic a texture that looks great. 

Ideal Conditions for Wall Graphics are Unlikely

In a perfect setting, the wall would have no texture and not be painted with low-VOC paints. However, these walls are challenging to find. Sometimes, we can work around challenging paint usage with a primer. We would then have to wait for the coating to cure. However, in most cases, it makes more sense to adjust the vinyl we use to the substrate’s makeup.
