Do you remember the giant squid we designed as a logo for Amazon’s team known as “The Squad?” It has become the mascot for the company’s LGB3 facility. Recently, the client asked us to incorporate the squid in a large project consisting of perforated window graphics in Corona, CA.
What started as a giant vinyl wall decal measuring 16 feet in height and 19 feet in width soon became a mascot that set the tone for Amazon’s Eastvale facility. The client requested it for custom-designed wall graphics in the employee communication zone and appreciated its creative use around corners. Now, it was time to add it to a set of custom window graphics designs in Corona.
One window displays the graphic’s center along with the “Release The Squad” tagline. Neighboring windows feature the kraken’s tentacles in motion. The client requested see-through window graphics that would allow those on the inside to see out.
Our graphic artist designed full-color window graphics. Technicians then printed them on perforated vinyl. Next, before the installation, we added an optically clear overlay that we heat and pressure-laminated. It adds to the product’s longevity because it protects the graphics from dirt accumulation and UV rays.
Is an optically clear laminate truly necessary? Would an expert glass panel preparation not make the use of this laminate redundant? In fact, adding the optically clear overlay is essential because it almost doubles the graphics’ durability by protecting the surface from UV rays, gritty dust, and rain. It also protects the colors from cleaning chemicals that could lighten the tones.
Another advantage of adding the transparent overlay is the reduction of glare on the graphic side. As a result, visitors approaching the building see a sharper image and much more vibrant colors. Concurrently, by protecting the graphics from dirt accumulation, the overlay also maintains a clear view from the inside.
Maintenance personnel like the smooth, glass-like finish that the overlay provides for the perforated window graphics. Besides not allowing dirt to get stuck in the tiny holes, it also keeps out the water. Window cleaners do not have to worry about lifts or tears caused by squeegees and similar cleaning tools.
