Under the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) sign rules, permits for illuminated signs are issued only to a licensed C-10 electrical contractor or a C-45 electrical sign contractor. If your channel letters, cabinet sign, or lighted logo will be installed in the City of Los Angeles, your sign company needs one of those licenses to pull the permit. Superior Signs and Graphics holds a C-45.
How a Los Angeles sign permit moves through LADBS
- 1Confirm the zone. The zone of your lot decides which signs are allowed and where; it can be looked up on the city’s ZIMAS system.
- 2Apply for a building permit and a sign pre-inspection. LADBS requires a building permit application and, in most cases, a sign pre-inspection for each new, altered, or removed sign.
- 3Submit dimensioned plans. A plot plan shows the lot, buildings, and every existing and proposed sign, with elevations showing sign height and size.
- 4Add structural plans when needed. Freestanding signs and larger wall signs need plans and calculations stamped by a licensed engineer or architect; a wall sign under 100 square feet usually does not.
- 5Plan check, permit, and inspection. LADBS reviews the plans, issues the permit, and its Sign Enforcement Division inspects new sign construction.
A permit is also required to alter or remove an existing sign. A simple face change in an existing cabinet does not need one, but removing the cabinet does. We handle every step above as part of the project.
